Sierra Negra vocano / Chico
Volcán Chico is located just northeast of the Sierra Negra volcano at an apporximate altitude of 860 meters. In 2005, an eruption took place on the northeastern side of the caldera of Sierra Negra. The lava covered a big part of the caldera’s interior and in some places rose by over two meters.
The Sierra Negra volcano is considered the oldest of the volcanoes in Isabela. The youngest is Cerro Azul, followed by Wolf, Fernandina, Darwin, Alcedo and Sierra Negra. This area is highly active, the last three volcanic events having been registered in the ’90s.
